Introduction
Last Sunday in The Master Key Experience webinar, we studied “The Hero’s Journey” that was popularized by Joseph Campbell. Campbell studied many cultures and found that the core belief and struggles of every culture was virtually identical. He believed that there is a journey that everyone must go through as they mature.
What is the Hero’s Journey?
The journey that everyone must go through, leads us from our ordinary, known, comfortable world to the unknown world where we conquer our fears and then return to the known world with a deeper understanding which we teach to others.
Along the hero’s journey, we meet The Herald who sounds the Call to Adventure to us. The Herald can be a friend who tells us about an opportunity, an ad we see about a class, or a book we read talking about someone who went from their known life to the unknown and experienced greater things.
The Call to Adventure disrupts our known world by presenting a challenge or quest that must be undertaken. It is scary and most of us are reluctant heroes who resist the call because of fear of the unknown. Over time this call begins to burn within us.
The Herald can show up several times and we usually resist the Call to Adventure until something big happens in our life that pushes us over the threshold from the known to the unknown. We may have a tragic loss of a loved one, spouse or job and feel that we have to leave the safety of our known life to experience greater things.
On the hero’s journey we encounter helpers and mentors who offer us guidance along the way. We come up against challenges and temptations which brings us to an abyss where we face our greatest fears and challenges. At this point we experience “death” of our old self and rebirth. Here we are experiencing a transformation where we find our authentic self. We then return to our known world, but we are different than before, and we are able to help others along their own hero’s journey.
Conclusion
Does this journey sound familiar? It should. It is in our movies and our fiction books because we are all in search of heroes. Maybe you are at the point in your life, in the hero’s journey, that it is time we accept the call to adventure, cross the threshold from the known into the unknown, find your authentic self and become The Hero to others.
